Once the temperature reaches 28 degrees and below your plants are at serious risk for cellular damage and crop loss.

So, how do you protect your plants from the damages of cold weather?
Well, there are a few things you can do if you know the freezing weather is coming:

  • Bring any potted plants indoors
  • Dig up tender bulbs and store them in a cool, dry place
  • Water plants thoroughly before a freeze to prevent desiccation (extreme drying of the plant). This also helps with insulating the plant cells.
  • Tender plants can be covered with a bucket or flower pot or a layer of mulch.  Remember to uncover them once freezing temperature has subsided.
  • Trees and shrubs can be covered with fabric such as blankets or old sheets. *Do not use plastic. For best results, you will want to drape the fabric over a frame to keep it from touching the plant or its leaves.  Covering the plant helps trap and insulate the heat.
  • Do not plant flowers or crops that you know will not recover well from a frost, such as: hardy perennials, trees, and shrubs.
