Weeds are just plants that grow where you don’t want them. Obnoxious weeds can be unsightly and grow to be quite tall if they are left alone. Spring is NOT a season for weeds. Let us figure out how to get rid of these problematic plants.
Mulch Over Them
Mulch is powerful on weeds; it acts as a barrier between the weeds and the sun. By covering your problem areas with mulch, you are inhibiting the weeds to grow underneath themselves.
- Cover the soil with mulch between your plants and wherever else you see fit to prevent the weeds from sprouting.
- When placing the mulch down, make sure to keep it a little bit away from your plants, to
keep the insects from making their home in there.
- Some of the best organic mulch contains wheat straw, shredded leaves, and woodchips.
Dig and Pull
The dreadful task you were hoping to avoid, yes you guessed it: digging and pulling the weeds out by hand. When pulling the weeds out, make sure you pick them out at the root, to prevent further growth. If you are unable to get the root out with the weed, try to use a fork to get the root out of the ground by prying it.
If in a month or so, you realize that pulling them up did not work, then you may need to do some digging. A garden spade should do the trick when ridding your garden of weeds. The best time to pull weeds is after rainfall or watering because they come up nice and easy.
Let them stay for just a little while
Before you plant your garden, you should let your weeds grow just for a little while. In early spring, you should lay clear plastic sheets over your garden in hopes of warming up the soil while allowing the weeds to germinate. Then once you can’t take the sight of them anymore, or after they grow a few inches, pull them out and plant your garden.
Use drip irrigation
By utilizing drip irrigation, you may be able to control your weeds for good. Drip irrigation only waters YOUR plants, not the areas that don’t. Which then causes weeds to grow where they are not welcome.
