August Yard Maintenance Checklist

It’s time to get your yard and garden ready for autumn.

The month of August is busy when it comes to yard maintenance. There’s a lot that needs to be done before the fall season for homeowners that want fruitful gardens and lush lawns. But, we’ve broken it down into a list that’s easy enough to follow.

Lawn Maintenance

You worked all of last year so you could have a beautiful lawn this summer. To keep it that way, mow on a longer blade setting and don’t get discouraged if the top burns slightly (It’s entirely natural during a Texas summer).

Checklist

  • Prepare for the fall grass seed (if you actually need to seed your grass)
  • Level low spots
  • Remove weeds
  • Order your seed
  • Aerate your lawn
  • Dethatch your lawn
  • Fertilize (but only if you’ve had enough rain)

Get down in the garden.

For gardeners, August is a particularly busy time. Whether you’re growing flowers, herbs, vegetables or all of the above, you’ve got a lot to do.

Checklist

  • Cut herbs to dry or freeze them for winter use
  • Plant fall vegetable and herb seeds
  • Trim and fertilize flower containers
  • Treat diseased plants and remove diseased foliage
  • Continue deadheading
  • Label plants with garden stakes

Don’t forget about your shrubs and trees.

Shrubs and trees are low maintenance, so homeowners forget to take care of them.

Checklist

  • Pick up fallen fruit
  • Install stakes for training and shaping
  • Water newly planted trees and shrubs even more

Plan ahead for the fall season.

Don’t procrastinate getting ready for the fall planting season or you might not have all the necessary components to plant in time.

Checklist

  • Order spring bulbs (chill in refrigerator)
  • Order shrubs and trees
  • Apply compost starter to new compost
  • Keep up with shrub growth
