Tips on Watering Your Lawn During the Winter

Lubbock Irrigation Supply - Watermaster pros

There is a simple way to tell if your lawn needs watering during the winter months.  If you are mowing and your grass is still growing, then you need to keep watering!

Here are some tips and guidelines on what to look out for:

  • When the temperature is consistently below 30 degrees, your lawn typically will remain dormant. So, store your lawn and sprinkler equipment in a freeze-free area.
  • You will want to continually mow and water your lawn when the winter is milder. Warm season grasses may become dormant in warmer winters. Occasional rain and snow will be sufficient enough moisture to keep your lawn healthy whether it is a warm-season or cool-season lawn through the winter.
  • If you are in a climate where the temperature rarely drops below the 40’s, then your lawn should stay green, and your typical routine should not be interrupted.

How to tell if your lawn needs watering

You may want to start by walking across your lawn and inspecting it.  Look at your footprints on the lawn, and if they disappear, you don’t need to water.  If you can still see your footprints in the lawn after walking across it, then you will most likely need to water immediately.

Don’t overwater

If you are only trying to repair or replenish a small area of grass, then you don’t need your whole watering system running.  A stationary sprinkler should do the trick.  Typically these systems spray at a radius of 15 feet.  You can reduce the span of the water by turning the water down on the spigot.
